Chapter 14

Thomas planned to make the return trip to Houston in one day so the Zunkers awakened with an alarm at five. By six, they had checked out of their motel and were on the road.

The calm, empty streets of Berry Mountain reminded Paul of a ghost town, all the more appropriate for what had occurred there in the past few days. The town slept, seeming to ignore the Zunker Aerostar making its way up First Street toward the edge of town.

When they passed the large, hideous, old house at the end of the street, Paul glanced at his sister but found her asleep. That’s good for her, he thought. It can’t scare her again. Now Paul was disturbed by the horrible old presence for it reminded him of his sister’s fearful reaction to it. Now that Kirby Peterson had filled in the blanks, the house seemed even more sinister than it had the day they first saw it. But then he had not been upset by it; he had only been interested. Now, his sister’s reaction combined with what he had learned gave him an aversion to the structure equal to what his sister had felt that first day. He was glad to be leaving Berry Mountain and his feelings toward the old house underscored that feeling.

Paul wanted to wake his sister and ask her how she felt about leaving, but something — he couldn’t determine what — prevented him from doing so. Although he had been glad she’d slept through town, now he felt he needed her support. He leaned back against his window and stared at her.

God, he thought. Have you ever been through some crap. I hope you sleep all the way home. He sighed and straightened up in his seat to think of other things.

“The trip home should take about nine or ten hours,” Thomas announced, turning south at Harrison, Arkansas. “I’ll be glad to get home; I don’t mind telling you.”

Thomas’s announcement awakened Alex and she sat up, blinking her eyes and breathing heavily. She shifted in her seat and turned toward her brother.

“Well, Pauli,” she said. “I’d hoped we were a lot farther along than we are. Nine or ten hours. God! Will we ever get home?”

“Eight or nine more, now, Sis.”

“I hope you waved goodbye to Berry Mountain for me.”

“Yep. Even Elizabeth Merriwether’s creepy old house.”

“Yuck. I’m glad I was asleep. That’s all I need, one more jolt by that place.” She crossed her legs and locked her hands around her knees. “I think we have an ally in Kirby Peterson, Pauli. He was even more understanding than Papa was. In a way I wish he were coming home with us.” She laughed softly and turned toward the front seat. “I do believe that guy is going to help us with Caleb Underwood.”

“He’s a lawyer, Sis. They’re supposed to be good listeners.”

“Lawyer or no lawyer, I think he really latched on to what’s happening to us.” She shifted her weight on the seat and turned her head to her own window.
